In 2008, I pitched the project for this book to my supervisor at Refugee Services. Eight months later, I had interviewed nineteen refugees and asylees, muddled through transcriptions and getting volunteers to transcribe, editing the stories, and starting preliminary grant research. The fabulous Naomi Thorson took over in 2010, interviewing more contributors, securing a grant, and seeing it through to publication…with a dedication from Garrison Keillor! The final text includes eleven of my interviews and seven of hers, as well as an introduction and conclusion she wrote, a Foreword by Hmong author Kao Kalia Yang, and country profiles.
